Remarkable gardens
- Remarkable garden
Classified as a historic monument in 1995, the garden has been awarded the "Remarkable Garden" label by the D.R.A.C. The garden is currently being restored, with the participation of the French government, the Conseil Régional d'Auvergne and the Conseil Général du Puy-de-Dôme, and a great deal of effort on the part of the owners and gardeners.
Located in front of the 12th-15th century fortress, the kitchen garden was added to the fortress in the 15th or 16th century. Michel de Montaigne crossed the Auvergne on his way back from Italy in 1581. On 20 November, he passed through Pontgibaud, went to greet Mme de La Fayette and spent half an hour in her room. He wrote: "The garden is small, square, the paths are raised by four or five feet, the squares are at the bottom where there are many fruit trees and little grass. The sides of the squares are sunken and covered with dressed stone...". The current kitchen garden, covering 96 ares, is well exposed to the south-west of the château, which protects it from the northerly winds, and has hardly changed. In the 18th century, it was enhanced by two round pools with fountains fed by a spring collected a few kilometres away.
The kitchen garden is made up of tiles and terraces on three levels, separated by orthogonal paths. These terraces are supported by lava walls crowned with perfectly grouted slabs of the same type; these walls, in addition to their primary function as retaining walls, also play an important role in regulating heat. The perspective design has been particularly well thought out so that it can be seen from the château, which is offset from the axis of the garden.
