Château de Gisors
Gisors Castle is an outstanding example of castral architecture from the 11th to the 16th centuries.
This fortress, a veritable stronghold and eastern lock of medieval Normandy, was part of a vast campaign of fortifications in the Epte valley, the natural frontier between the Duchy of Normandy and the French possessions.
Gisors is deeply marked by the history of the Templar treasure. From 1158 to 1160, Gisors castle was entrusted to the Knights Templar, and from 1310 to 1314, the last Grand Master of the Order, Jacques de Molay, along with three other dignitaries, were imprisoned there. It was in the middle of the 20th century that the legend of the Templar treasure was born.
Following a major works programme that began in 2019, the Barbican and the Prisoner's Tower are now once again open to the public. The highlight of the visit is the famous dungeon room, decorated with magnificent graffiti worthy of bas-reliefs.
